What it does

When installed, the agent takes a product idea, PRD, roadmap item or discussion and rewrites it as a structured engineering plan before any coding starts. The plan lists the rules that must hold, the boundaries of scope, the states and interfaces involved, what is out of scope, and which questions still need a decision. It saves this as a reusable document in the repository, such as a product context file or a template at docs/examples/product-capability-template.md.

Great for

  • Engineers planning a feature that spans multiple services, repos or teams before writing code
  • Tech leads who keep repeating the same hidden assumptions during design review
  • Teams using ECC workflows who want a durable spec artifact instead of chat notes

Skip it if

  • Simple, single-file changes or small bug fixes, where the planning overhead outweighs the benefit
  • Non-technical product brainstorming, since the output is engineering-oriented and assumes access to repo docs and architecture
  • Situations where no one can answer the open questions; the skill will flag them rather than resolve them, so it only produces a list of blockers

Try asking

  • “Turn this PRD for multi-tenant billing into an implementation contract and list the open questions blocking engineering”
  • “Review this roadmap item and tell me which constraints and invariants must hold before we start building”
  • “Create a capability manifest for the new notification feature using our product-capability template”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Product Capability PlannerInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    product-capability.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip product-capability.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip product-capability.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Provide the PRD, roadmap note or issue text along with the relevant repo docs so the constraints are grounded in real code, not guesses
  • Ask the agent to mark anything it cannot verify as open, and resolve those items with product owners before implementation
  • Keep the generated artifact in the repo so later sessions and other tools can reuse it
