What it does

When you plug an M5Stack ESP32 device (such as a Cardputer or Core board) into your computer, this skill guides the agent through the full setup: finding the device on USB, identifying the model, flashing the UIFlow 2.0 firmware, and copying a MicroPython app bundle (Claude Buddy, Snake, Hello) onto the device. The agent runs helper Python scripts to do this and asks you to press physical buttons on the device at the right moments.

Great for

  • Hobbyists who just bought an M5Stack Cardputer or Core board and want it ready to use quickly
  • Makers setting up several identical devices who want a repeatable provisioning routine
  • Developers resetting or refreshing apps on an existing M5Stack board

Skip it if

  • Users without a physical M5Stack or ESP32 board, since the workflow depends on a connected device
  • Anyone who might plug in a different board while the wrong firmware variant is targeted, because flashing the wrong image can boot-loop the device
  • Users who do not want scripts run on their machine, because the skill executes Python scripts and flashes firmware

Try asking

  • “I just plugged in my Cardputer-Adv, set it up with the Claude Buddy app”
  • “Reset my M5Stack Core2 and flash UIFlow again”
  • “Refresh the apps on my already-flashed device”
  • “Run a smoke test to check the I2C, screen, speaker and button on my board”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    m5-onboard.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip m5-onboard.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip m5-onboard.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Say which model you have; if you say just 'Cardputer', the agent will ask whether it is the Adv version because the two need different firmware.
  • Keep only one ESP32 device plugged in, or name the serial port, so the agent does not guess the wrong device.
  • Watch for on-screen and terminal prompts: the agent will ask you to hold G0 and press RST on the device, and it will wait for you to confirm the screen went dark before continuing.
