What it does
This skill gives the AI agent a set of Docker best practices to follow when you work on containerised projects. Once installed, the agent can write or review docker-compose.yml files, multi-stage Dockerfiles, network and volume layouts, and hardening settings such as non-root users and dropped capabilities. It documents patterns and example configuration; it does not itself run containers or change your files.
Great for
- Developers setting up a local multi-service app (web app, database, cache) with Docker Compose
- Teams reviewing Dockerfiles for image size and security before production
- Engineers moving from local development to a container-based workflow
Skip it if
- People with no Docker experience who expect a turnkey deployment; the skill assumes familiarity with containers and YAML
- Production deployments without review: the examples (for instance a 'read_only' or 'restart: always' setting, or a Postgres password of 'postgres') are development defaults and must be adapted
Try asking
- “Set up a docker-compose file for a Node app with Postgres and Redis”
- “Review my Dockerfile for security and image size problems”
- “Explain how to stop my database being reachable from the public internet in Compose”
- “Write a multi-stage Dockerfile with separate dev and production targets”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip docker-patterns.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip docker-patterns.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Ask for the pattern that matches your stack (the examples are Node.js-focused) and state whether the target is development or production.
- Review any generated config before running it, especially credentials, ports and privilege settings.
- Keep secrets out of Dockerfiles and git; ask the agent to use env files or Docker secrets as shown in the skill.
