What it does

This skill makes Claude Code review each finished coding session through a Stop hook (a settings entry that runs a command when a session ends). It looks for reusable patterns such as error fixes, debugging approaches, and project conventions, and if it finds useful ones it saves them as new learned skills in a local folder for future use. The document also describes a configuration file for thresholds and pattern types, and compares its approach with a more advanced design called Homunculus v2.

Great for

  • Developers who use Claude Code daily and want recurring fixes and project conventions captured automatically
  • Teams that want to build up project-specific guidance over many sessions
  • People experimenting with self-improving agent setups who can review what gets saved

Skip it if

  • Users who do not want an agent writing new files into their ~/.claude folder without close review, since auto-extraction can save low-quality or incorrect patterns
  • Sensitive or confidential projects, because session transcripts are processed and saved, which may include secrets or private code if they appear in the conversation
  • Anyone expecting guaranteed reliable triggering, since the document itself notes that skill-based observation is probabilistic compared with hooks

Try asking

  • “Install the continuous-learning hook so patterns from today's debugging session are saved for next time”
  • “Edit config.json to raise min_session_length and turn off auto_approve so I review extracted skills first”
  • “Run the /learn command mid-session to extract a workaround I just discovered for this framework”
  • “Show me which learned skills were saved from my project-specific conventions this week”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Continuous Learning SkillInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    continuous-learning.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip continuous-learning.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip continuous-learning.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Keep auto_approve set to false and review each learned skill before relying on it
  • Check the ~/.claude/skills/learned/ folder periodically and delete entries that are wrong or contain sensitive details
  • Read the referenced evaluate-session.sh script before installing, since the SKILL.md file alone does not show what it does
