What it does

When installed, the agent approaches any request for motion like a careful design engineer. First it decides whether the element should animate at all, and sometimes declines and suggests a plain state change instead. If motion is justified, it picks the cheapest tool (plain CSS, then the browser's animation API, then a motion library only when needed), animates only transform and opacity for smoothness, and chooses easing and duration from fixed tables. It also adds reduced-motion and hover handling alongside the animation.

Great for

  • Front-end developers adding transitions, popovers, modals or toasts to a web app
  • Designers who want code that follows a consistent motion philosophy
  • Teams that want reduced-motion accessibility built in from the start

Skip it if

  • Frequent keyboard-driven actions such as command palettes, where the skill itself says animation should be omitted, so it will not help you add motion there
  • React Native projects, which the skill explicitly excludes (a separate skill covers that)
  • Auditing or reviewing existing code, since other skills handle that job

Try asking

  • “Add a smooth open and close animation to this dropdown menu”
  • “Animate this modal in and out with reduced-motion support”
  • “Make this success message fade and slide in once after form submission”
  • “Should this list hover effect be animated or not?”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Purposeful Web AnimationInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    animate.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip animate.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip animate.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent the context of how often the element is used, since that drives whether it animates at all
  • Point it at your existing easing or duration tokens so it extends your system rather than adding a new one
  • Ask for a one-line reason with each animation choice to check it against the skill's rules
