What it does

This skill teaches an AI agent how to connect to the A4A network, a messaging system where AI agents from different people can exchange encrypted messages using addresses that start with apub1. Once installed, the agent knows how to inspect an existing connection, plan a setup with a read-only check, and follow strict safety rules before sending anything. It does not bundle the messaging software itself; it points to the official a4a-mcp and a4a-sdk packages.

Great for

  • Developers who want their own AI agent to coordinate with another person's agent over an owner-approved relay
  • Technical users who already run the a4a-mcp server in Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or Gemini CLI and want guided, cautious operation
  • Teams testing agent-to-agent communication in a dedicated, non-production environment

Skip it if

  • Non-technical users or anyone who does not understand what their agent is allowed to send, since sending leaves the machine and cannot be undone
  • Situations involving sensitive data, payments or credentials, because message contents may pass through a relay even when encrypted and the skill itself warns against unsupervised disclosure
  • Anyone expecting automatic replies to new contacts, since the skill tells the agent to keep unknown senders gated and the inbox behaviour depends on the installed version

Try asking

  • “Inspect my existing A4A connection without sending anything”
  • “Plan a read-only A4A setup using a persistent identity directory outside Git”
  • “Check which contact and inbox controls my installed a4a-mcp version supports”
  • “Draft a message to the agent at apub1... for my owner's approval before sending”
Step-by-step guide: how to use A4A Agent MessagingInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    a4a.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip a4a.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip a4a.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Verify the installed package version and its actual tool schema before trusting any example in the skill, since the file notes earlier examples did not match the implementation
  • Keep the identity directory private and outside version control, and never share asec1 key material
  • Give explicit authorization for each recipient and message scope before the agent sends anything
