What it does

When you change a prompt for an AI model, this skill guides the agent to check whether the new version got worse on a fixed set of test cases compared with the old one. It asks the agent to record exact model settings, predeclare pass/fail rules, and treat missing or timed-out results as incomplete rather than as passes. The output is a reviewable report of which cases passed, failed, or are still unknown, with honest limits on what the evidence proves.

Great for

  • Developers maintaining prompts for production AI features who want a disciplined before-and-after comparison
  • Teams that need an auditable record of why a prompt change was kept, revised, or rejected
  • People evaluating LLM outputs for schema, refusal, or tool-selection regressions

Skip it if

  • Quick one-off prompt tweaks where a full evaluation set is overkill
  • Judging factual or code correctness on its own, since the skill itself says similarity and judge outputs do not prove correctness
  • Handling real private user data without redaction, because the skill warns against storing private prompts or tokens in shared registers

Try asking

  • “Compare my new support-answer prompt against the baseline on our 40 fixed test cases and tell me which cases regressed”
  • “Check whether this prompt change broke JSON schema output, and flag any cases with missing results”
  • “Build a regression register for these prompt revisions with case IDs, model version, and pass/fail/incomplete status”
Step-by-step guide: how to use AI Prompt Regression TestingInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    ai-prompt-regression-testing.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip ai-prompt-regression-testing.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip ai-prompt-regression-testing.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Provide your own fixed evaluation dataset with frozen case IDs; the skill does not include one.
  • Predeclare pass criteria before running, since the skill asks the agent not to choose thresholds after seeing results.
  • Treat a 'checks-passed' result as only the recorded checks passing, not a release certificate.
