What it does
This skill teaches an AI agent to configure service mesh rules (Istio or Linkerd) that sit between the microservices behind an AI application, such as gateways, retrievers, rerankers and model servers. It covers encrypting traffic between services (mTLS), limiting which services may call which, splitting traffic between model versions for canary or A/B tests, retries, and circuit breakers that stop failing GPU backends from cascading. The agent generates example Kubernetes YAML and install commands, with warnings to validate in a disposable environment first.
Great for
- Platform or DevOps engineers running model-serving backends on Kubernetes with Istio or Linkerd
- Teams that need mTLS and fine-grained authorization between inference microservices
- Engineers planning canary releases or A/B tests for model versions
Skip it if
- Teams without a Kubernetes cluster or service mesh, since the examples assume one exists
- Direct use on production clusters without review: the skill includes mutating install commands and policies that can break live routes, and it is rated critical risk
- Expecting a complete egress firewall: the skill itself states a ServiceEntry is not one, so outbound controls need separate network policy
Try asking
- “Write a strict mTLS PeerAuthentication for my ai-inference namespace, keeping Prometheus metrics on plaintext port 9090”
- “Create an AuthorizationPolicy so only my api-gateway and orchestrator service accounts can call model-server”
- “Set up a 90/10 canary split between model-server v1-stable and v2-experimental with retries and timeouts”
- “Add circuit breaking and outlier detection to my model-server DestinationRule”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Give the agent your cluster context, mesh version and namespace up front so it checks CRD schemas and merge rules before generating YAML
- Ask for a dry run or istioctl analyze output and test in a non-production cluster before applying anything
- The examples are fragments, not a complete manifest; consolidate multiple DestinationRules for the same host yourself
