What it does
AGENTS.md is a plain-text file that tells coding agents how to work in a repository: which commands to run, which folders matter, and which actions need caution. With this skill installed, the agent reads the repo's existing docs, manifests, and CI config before writing or editing that file, so the instructions reflect what the project actually does. It also tries to preserve the maintainer's existing rules and make small, focused edits rather than rewriting the whole file.
Great for
- Maintainers who want a clean, accurate AGENTS.md for a project
- Teams with monorepos that need root plus per-package instruction files
- Projects where an old AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md has stale commands or duplicated rules
Skip it if
- Projects without a need for agent instructions, since the output is only a documentation file for other agents
- Situations where the agent must invent policy: the skill says to ask when intent cannot be established from the repository, but a user who skips review could still publish wrong rules
Try asking
- “Audit our AGENTS.md and fix any commands that no longer match package.json”
- “Create a root AGENTS.md for this repo based on its CI workflows and README”
- “Add a nested AGENTS.md for the packages/api folder with only its differing rules”
- “Reconcile AGENTS.md with CLAUDE.md and the copilot instructions file”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip agents-md.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip agents-md.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Review the diff as a maintainer before committing, and check that every command it lists actually exists in your config
- Ask the agent to report which checks it actually ran versus only read from config, since the skill asks for that distinction
- For monorepos, ask for a root file first and add narrower nested files only where a subtree truly differs
