What it does

Reviews story files (task descriptions for game development work) and reports whether each one has what a developer needs before writing code: clear acceptance criteria, no unresolved design questions, valid architecture decision records and finished dependencies. Each story gets a verdict of BLOCKED, NEEDS WORK, NOT ASSESSED or READY, with a list of gaps and suggested fixes. It is read-only: it reports and offers drafted fixes in the chat but does not edit files.

Great for

  • Game studios or solo developers using the Claude Code Game Studios template who want to check sprint stories before implementation
  • Producers or leads who need a quick readiness report across a sprint or epic
  • Teams that keep design docs, ADRs and sprint plans in the expected folder layout

Skip it if

  • Projects without this folder structure (story files, ADRs, sprint status YAML), since most checks depend on those files and will report missing items
  • Non-game or general software teams that do not use the same story and ADR conventions, as the checklist is tailored to this template
  • Final quality sign-off: it checks documentation completeness, not whether the code works

Try asking

  • “Are the stories in the current sprint ready to start?”
  • “Check story production/epics/combat/story-003.md for readiness”
  • “Run a readiness check on all stories in the combat epic”
  • “Which stories are blocked by missing ADRs?”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Story Readiness CheckerInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 3 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    story-readiness.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip story-readiness.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip story-readiness.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Pass a story path, 'sprint' or 'all' as the argument, and optionally --review full|lean|solo to override the review mode
  • Answer the interactive questions in chat; the skill waits for your answer rather than guessing
  • Fix BLOCKED items first, as they are the most useful findings, then NEEDS WORK items
