What it does

When installed, the agent can open a Google Sheet through the gws command-line tool, read the cell data from two tabs (for example January and February), and compare them to point out what changed. It is a short recipe: it tells the agent which read commands to run and then asks it to identify the differences. It relies on the separate gws-sheets skill and the gws tool for actual access to the spreadsheet.

Great for

  • Finance or operations staff comparing monthly sheets with the same layout
  • Anyone checking what changed between two versions of a tracking spreadsheet
  • Users already set up with the Google Workspace CLI (gws) and its Sheets skill

Skip it if

  • Spreadsheets with different column layouts or large data ranges, since the fixed range A1:D may miss rows or columns and produce misleading comparisons
  • Sensitive financial or personal data sent to an AI agent without considering who can see that data and where it is processed

Try asking

  • “Compare the January and February tabs of our budget sheet and list what changed”
  • “Find differences between the Q1 and Q2 tabs of this sales spreadsheet”
  • “Which rows differ between the two inventory tabs in this Google Sheet?”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Compare Google Sheets TabsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    recipe-compare-sheet-tabs.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip recipe-compare-sheet-tabs.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip recipe-compare-sheet-tabs.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Replace SHEET_ID and the tab names in the range with your own values before running, and check the range covers all your data.
  • Make sure gws is installed and authenticated with access to the spreadsheet first.
  • Ask the agent to summarise differences by row or by column to make the output easier to review.
