What it does

When installed, the agent gathers what your personal knowledge base (the 'brain') already says about a topic, sends that context to Perplexity's web search, and asks for cited findings focused on what has changed or is new. The result is saved as a structured research page with sections for new developments, confirming signals, contradictions, suggested note updates, and citations. Non-experts can think of it as a smarter web search that already knows what you know and skips repeating it.

Great for

  • People maintaining a personal or team knowledge base who want periodic updates on companies, people, or deals
  • Analysts or founders checking the current state of a topic against notes they already have
  • Anyone building briefing or monitoring pipelines who wants fewer repeated facts

Skip it if

  • Simple page fetches or single-URL reads, where the web_fetch tool is cheaper and more direct; this skill is for synthesized research
  • Use without a Perplexity API key or without a gbrain setup, since the skill depends on both and will fall back to brain-only answers
  • Sensitive or confidential topics, because the brain context you include is sent to a third-party service (Perplexity)

Try asking

  • “Perplexity research on Acme Corp: what's new since our last update?”
  • “Current state of our Series B fundraising landscape, compared with what the brain already has”
  • “Surface new developments about the people in my deals/ folder this week”
  • “Web research on EU AI regulation, focused on changes in the last month”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Perplexity Brain ResearchInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    perplexity-research.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip perplexity-research.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip perplexity-research.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Keep brain pages current first; the quality of the 'what's new' comparison depends on how complete the supplied context is
  • Use the recency filter (week or month) for news-driven topics and omit it for evergreen research
  • Check Perplexity's pricing before running bulk or cron jobs, since the skill notes no fixed per-request price is published
