What it does
This skill teaches an AI agent to pull values out of a Google Sheets spreadsheet using the gws command-line tool. Once installed, when you ask the agent for data from a specific sheet or cell range, it runs a read-only command and works with the returned values. It does not change the spreadsheet.
Great for
- People who want an agent to summarise or analyse numbers stored in a Google Sheet
- Developers building scripts or reports that pull spreadsheet values
- Teams that keep operational data in Sheets and want quick lookups without opening the browser
Skip it if
- Writing, editing or formatting a spreadsheet, since this skill is read-only and the write commands live in a different skill (gws-sheets)
- Setups where the gws CLI is not installed or not authenticated to your Google account, because the skill cannot work without it
- Sensitive spreadsheets you do not want an agent to access, since reading them requires your Google credentials to be used through the CLI
Try asking
- “Read the values in Sheet1!A1:D10 from my sales spreadsheet and summarise the totals”
- “Show me everything on the Inventory tab of this spreadsheet ID”
- “Pull the first two columns of the budget sheet so we can compare them with last month”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Give the full range such as Sheet1!A1:D10 to avoid reading more data than you need
- Run gws generate-skills first if the shared gws-shared skill file is missing
- Check the gws auth setup before first use so the agent can reach your spreadsheet
