What it does
When installed, the agent gets a library of ready-made GitLab CI/CD pipeline patterns. Asked to set up automated building, testing or deployment for a GitLab project, it can draft a .gitlab-ci.yml file using these examples, covering stages, caching, Docker image builds, security scanning, Kubernetes rollouts with manual production gates, and Terraform plan/apply flows. It does not run anything on its own; the pipeline runs later inside GitLab.
Great for
- Developers setting up or tidying a GitLab CI/CD pipeline
- Teams wanting a manual approval gate before production deploys
- DevOps engineers starting a Kubernetes or Terraform pipeline in GitLab
Skip it if
- Projects on GitHub Actions or Jenkins, where the syntax differs (the skill points to a separate GitHub Actions skill instead)
- Non-technical users who have no GitLab project; the output is YAML that only makes sense inside GitLab
- Copying examples unchanged into production: they use placeholder names (my-app, example.com) and older syntax such as 'only:', and need checking against your own setup
Try asking
- “Create a GitLab CI pipeline that builds a Node app, runs lint and tests, and publishes a coverage report”
- “Add a Docker build and push to GitLab's container registry on main and tags”
- “Set up staging deploys on develop and a manual production deploy to Kubernetes on main”
- “Write a Terraform validate, plan and manual apply pipeline for GitLab”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip gitlab-ci-patterns.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip gitlab-ci-patterns.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Tell the agent your language, test commands and deploy target so it replaces the placeholder names and images
- Keep secrets in masked, protected GitLab CI variables and never paste tokens into the chat
- Review generated YAML and test it on a branch first, since the examples use deprecated 'only:' syntax and an auto-approve Terraform apply
