What it does

When installed, the agent reads a feature folder's spec, background notes, validation notes and mockups, then writes a single executive-summary.md file. The document is written in present tense and covers the problem, solution, target customers, why now, key capabilities, surprising design decisions, visual previews, scope exclusions, dependencies, success metrics, and short FAQs for sales, leadership and engineering. It is designed so one document serves all three audiences.

Great for

  • Product managers who need a standard summary of a feature that is ready for development
  • Teams whose feature folders already contain SPEC.md, background.md and validation.md files in the expected layout
  • Organisations that want one shared document for sales, leadership and engineering

Skip it if

  • Features that have no spec or validation files yet, because the agent has nothing grounded to summarise and may invent customers or metrics
  • Teams that do not use this specific folder structure or Jira-style status fields, since the template assumes them
  • Public or external announcements where unverified claims would be risky, since the output asks for named customers, dollar amounts and competitors that the agent must not fabricate

Try asking

  • “Write the executive summary for the checkout-redesign feature folder”
  • “Generate an exec summary for the bulk-import feature, pulling 2-3 key mockups”
  • “Create a one-page summary for sales and leadership for the SSO feature ready for development”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Executive Summary WriterInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    exec-summary.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip exec-summary.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip exec-summary.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Make sure SPEC.md and validation.md are complete before running, since the summary is only as accurate as its sources
  • Review named customers, dollar figures and competitor claims against your records, because the template asks for specifics the agent may not have
  • Ask for a shorter or longer version if the 600-800 word target does not suit your audience
