What it does

This skill teaches an AI agent how to use the Dial command-line tool, which gives it a real phone number for sending SMS, placing calls handled by an AI voice agent, and receiving inbound texts or verification codes. Once installed, the agent knows the usual workflows and the --json output conventions, and it knows where to look up current Dial documentation online instead of guessing. It is written for a pre-provisioned sandbox where the account and credentials are assumed to already exist.

Great for

  • Developers building agents that need to receive 2FA or OTP codes during automated testing or sign-up flows
  • Operators running a sandboxed agent that should be able to text or call a contact on a provisioned Dial number
  • People exploring what a communication API for AI agents can do

Skip it if

  • Anyone who wants the agent to contact people without their knowledge: the skill can send real SMS and place real calls, which may be costly, unwanted, or regulated (for example, consent and telemarketing rules)
  • Environments where the Dial account or credentials are not set up for this purpose, since the skill assumes a pre-wired number and will not configure one
  • Users who expect offline behaviour: the skill depends on the Dial service and on curl access to docs.getdial.ai

Try asking

  • “Text +1 415 555 0123 to confirm our meeting time tomorrow”
  • “Call the restaurant and ask whether they have a table for two at 7pm”
  • “Wait for the verification code the service sends to this number and tell me what it is”
  • “Buy a new Dial number for a support line with an inbound instruction about refunds”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    dial-cli.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip dial-cli.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip dial-cli.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Be explicit about who to message or call and what to say, since messages and calls are real and go out immediately
  • Run dial <command> --help the first time you use a command, as the skill directs, rather than guessing flags
  • Check the operator's policy before buying numbers, because purchasing requires an explicit consent attestation and costs money
