What it does

This skill lets a NanoClaw installation run a group's AI agent on OpenAI's Codex (via its app-server) instead of Claude, either alongside or in place of it. Once installed, the agent keeps Codex's planning, tool use, MCP tools and server-side conversation history, and it can resume sessions. Login uses a ChatGPT subscription or OpenAI API key, which is handled by the selected gateway rather than stored in the container or .env.

Great for

  • Developers running NanoClaw who want some groups to use OpenAI Codex as their agent backend
  • Operators who already have a ChatGPT subscription or OpenAI API key and want per-group provider choice

Skip it if

  • People who only want to call OpenAI as a tool from Claude; the SKILL.md notes that is a different approach
  • Anyone unable to rebuild the container image or run setup commands, since installation requires copying files across several trees, editing barrel files and rebuilding

Try asking

  • “Install the Codex provider for NanoClaw and authenticate with my ChatGPT subscription”
  • “Switch the family group to use Codex with: ncl groups config update --provider codex”
  • “Re-run the add-codex install to refresh the payload files after an update”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 15 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    add-codex.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip add-codex.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip add-codex.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run the provider-auth shortcut command once to install and authenticate in one step.
  • Check the pre-flight list first; if the payload is already wired, skip straight to authentication.
  • Keep credentials in the gateway vault rather than .env, as the skill intends.
