What it does

Once installed, the agent follows a structured playbook for upgrading software libraries and frameworks to new major versions. It guides it to audit outdated and vulnerable packages, read changelogs, upgrade one package at a time with tests between steps, apply automated code fixes (codemods), and set up rollback steps if an upgrade fails. The file is mostly guidance and example commands and code; it is written around JavaScript/npm projects, with React as the main example.

Great for

  • Developers maintaining a JavaScript or TypeScript project who need to move to a new major framework version
  • Teams planning a staged upgrade path for several interdependent libraries
  • People who want an agent to suggest a safe order of upgrades and a testing approach before making changes

Skip it if

  • Non-JavaScript ecosystems such as Python, Java or Go, since the examples are npm, yarn and React-specific (the general approach may still help)
  • Running upgrades unattended on production code without review, because the examples include automatic installs, automatic commits and a rollback script that could discard local work (git stash, branch deletion)
  • Non-developers, since it assumes familiarity with package managers, test suites and git

Try asking

  • “Plan a safe upgrade from React 17 to React 18 for my app, in the right order with tests between steps”
  • “Audit my npm dependencies for outdated and vulnerable packages and suggest what to upgrade first”
  • “Write a migration script to rename deprecated APIs across my src folder, with a dry run first”
  • “Set up Renovate or Dependabot so minor and patch updates merge automatically but major updates need review”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Dependency Upgrade PlannerInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    dependency-upgrade.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip dependency-upgrade.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip dependency-upgrade.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask the agent to run the audit and planning steps first and review the plan before any package is installed or changed
  • Run upgrades on a separate branch and confirm tests pass before committing; review the rollback script before using it since it deletes a branch and runs git stash
  • Check any codemod URL you intend to run (it is fetched from GitHub) and use the dry-run option first
