What it does

Once installed, when you ask the agent to break an epic (a large feature chunk) into work items, it follows a structured process: it reads the epic's design document, the relevant architecture decisions and rules, then writes small story files, each with acceptance criteria (checkable conditions for done) and a link back to the requirement and decision that governs it. It also updates the epic's story table and an index file, and suggests next steps such as readiness checks and development. It is written for a game studio workflow built on a project of planning documents.

Great for

  • Game developers using the Claude Code Game Studios template who want structured stories from a design epic
  • Small teams that already keep epics, design docs and architecture decision records (ADRs) in a production folder
  • Producers or leads who want consistent acceptance criteria across a backlog

Skip it if

  • Projects without the expected production/epics and design/gdd folder structure, since the skill will stop or fail to find its inputs
  • Turning a whole game design into epics (the skill says it does not do this; use the epic-creation skill instead)
  • Anyone wanting a quick one-off task list: the process asks multiple questions and writes several files, which is heavier than needed

Try asking

  • “Break the combat epic into stories”
  • “Create the next batch of stories for the loot epic”
  • “Make stories for the foundation layer with review set to lean”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Create StoriesInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 3 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    create-stories.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip create-stories.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip create-stories.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run it once per epic and in dependency order: foundation epics first, then core, feature and presentation.
  • Choose the story granularity and review depth in your project config (story_granularity, review_mode) or with the --review flag before running, so the output size matches your needs.
  • Review the drafted story list before confirming the write step, since the skill asks for one approval before creating files.
