What it does

When installed, the agent follows this skill's guidance when you ask for changelogs, release notes, or commit message standards. It knows the Keep a Changelog layout (Added, Changed, Fixed, and similar sections, plus Breaking Changes and Upgrade Guide), the Conventional Commits format with scopes, footers and the ! marker for breaking changes, and common release-workflow practices such as using commitlint in CI. The skill is mostly written guidance and example templates; it does not itself run any tool.

Great for

  • Maintainers of open-source or internal projects who want consistent release notes
  • Teams adopting Conventional Commits and wanting commit-message rules explained
  • Developers setting up a release pipeline who want a starting template

Skip it if

  • Projects that need an automated tool actually run: the skill describes patterns but ships no scripts, so the agent will write guidance rather than generate a real changelog from your repository history unless you also supply the commits
  • Non-developers with no version control, where the terminology will be unfamiliar and the value is low

Try asking

  • “Set up a Conventional Commits standard for my team and explain the commit format to new contributors”
  • “Draft release notes for version 2.1.0 from this list of merged pull requests”
  • “Write a CHANGELOG.md in Keep a Changelog format for my project”
  • “Show me how to add commitlint to our CI pipeline to validate commit messages”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Changelog AutomationInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    changelog-automation.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip changelog-automation.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip changelog-automation.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Paste your actual commit log or PR list into the chat so the agent drafts notes from real changes rather than generic examples
  • Ask for the output in a specific format (for example Keep a Changelog sections) and review it, since the skill's example summary includes made-up figures that must not be copied into real releases
  • Pair the skill with your project's own tooling (such as commitlint or a release tool) that you install and verify separately
