What it does
This skill teaches an AI agent how to use a job-search scraper hosted on Apify, a third-party web-scraping platform, as one more source for the career-ops job scanner. You describe a job search in the portals.yml config file; when the scanner runs, the agent calls the Apify actor (a cloud scraper program), waits for results, and maps the returned fields (title, link, company, location) into the scanner's pipeline. It can optionally save full job descriptions locally.
Great for
- Job seekers who already use career-ops and want listings from job boards such as Indeed
- Developers who maintain a portals.yml setup and want a keyed, configurable data source
- Users who already have an Apify account and API token
Skip it if
- Anyone without an Apify account, since the token is required and the scraper runs on Apify's paid or metered service (possible cost, reason: each run consumes Apify credits)
- Users who do not want job-board data sent to a third-party service, because the search parameters and token are sent to api.apify.com (reason: privacy and credential exposure)
- Anyone expecting it to trigger automatically; it only runs for portals.yml entries that explicitly set provider: apify (reason: it will not activate on its own)
Try asking
- “Add an Indeed search for VP of Engineering roles in Chicago to my portals.yml using the Apify provider and run the scanner”
- “Set up a LinkedIn job search through Apify and map the title and company fields into my pipeline”
- “Run node scan.mjs and show me the new Apify job results added to the pipeline”
- “Cache the job descriptions for the Apify results under jds/ by adding a description field mapping”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Keep maxItems low at first to limit Apify usage and cost while you test the field mapping
- Check the actor's documented output field names and list fallbacks in field_map, since the first non-empty value wins
- Store APIFY_TOKEN only in .env and never commit that file to version control
