What it does

This skill sets up the NanoClaw agent system so selected agent groups can call Tavily, a web search and page extraction service, as tools. It installs a pinned mcp-remote bridge into the agent container image, registers Tavily's remote server for chosen groups without requiring an API key at first, and limits the tools to Search and Extract. It also adds instructions so that when the free shared allowance runs out, the agent guides an operator through creating a paid key stored in the OneCLI vault.

Great for

  • Operators of a NanoClaw deployment who want web search for agent groups that do not already have built-in web tools
  • Teams using non-Claude providers in NanoClaw who need MCP-based web search or structured page extraction
  • Developers who want to try Tavily without signing up for an API key first

Skip it if

  • Users of Claude-provider groups who already have built-in WebSearch and WebFetch and do not need Tavily's structured extraction (the skill itself says the gain is smaller there)
  • Shared or production hosts where the keyless allowance is shared across all groups and could be exhausted unexpectedly, or where the operator is not ready to manage a paid key and gateway configuration
  • Anyone unfamiliar with NanoClaw's container, OneCLI and ncl tooling, since the steps edit configuration, rebuild the image and restart agent groups

Try asking

  • “Install Tavily search and extract for my research agent group and confirm one search works”
  • “Add Tavily web search to the Codex-provider groups in my NanoClaw setup”
  • “Set up Tavily with the paid-key upgrade path so agents can ask for a key when the free limit is hit”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 4 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    add-tavily-tool.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip add-tavily-tool.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip add-tavily-tool.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run the skill only as a NanoClaw operator with admin approval available, since config changes and restarts are approval-gated.
  • Check which groups should receive Tavily first, and keep the keyless setup if the OneCLI gateway check fails.
  • Review the registered arguments with ncl groups config get after install to confirm only tavily_search and tavily_extract are exposed.
