What it does

When a book, article or speaker cites a study or a number, this skill guides the agent to check whether the paper exists, how the figure was produced, whether raw data is available, and whether others have replicated or challenged it. It works by sending the claim to another skill (perplexity-research) for the web lookup, then saves a structured brain page with a verdict such as Verified, Partially verified, Unverifiable, Misattributed or Retracted. The brain page is a stored note that future work can reuse.

Great for

  • Researchers or journalists checking whether a quoted study is real and accurately described
  • Students verifying citations before using them in an essay or report
  • People who maintain a personal knowledge base and want research claims recorded with a verification status

Skip it if

  • Open-ended topic research, where the perplexity-research skill is more suitable on its own
  • Adversarial or takedown work on a researcher; the skill itself says its purpose is rigor, not attack
  • Medical or safety decisions made on the basis of its verdict alone, since it relies on web search results and may miss retractions or context

Try asking

  • “Verify this academic claim: a 2019 study says remote work cut burnout by 40 percent.”
  • “Check this study that a podcast guest cited about sleep and memory.”
  • “Validate citation: Smith et al. 2011 on social priming, and tell me whether it has replicated.”
  • “Is this study real? The statistic appears in a bestselling business book.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Academic Claim VerifierInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    academic-verify.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip academic-verify.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip academic-verify.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the exact quote, paper title or DOI and the number claimed, since the skill scopes the claim before searching.
  • Treat the verdict as a starting point and open the cited sources, especially Retraction Watch and PubPeer results, before relying on it.
  • Re-run the check when a claim matters, because the stored brain page may be out of date.
