What it does

When you have a requirements spec for a multi-step coding task, this skill makes the agent write a detailed implementation plan before touching code. The plan lists the files to create or change, breaks the work into small tasks with checkable steps (write a failing test, run it, implement, verify, commit), and includes a self-review against the spec. It also offers a choice of how the plan should be executed afterwards.

Great for

  • Developers starting a feature from a written spec who want a clear, test-driven breakdown
  • Teams that hand implementation to other engineers or sub-agents and need unambiguous steps
  • People using agent workflows who want plans saved as markdown files for review

Skip it if

  • Small one-off edits or quick fixes, where a formal plan adds overhead without value
  • Projects with no written spec, since the skill assumes requirements already exist
  • Work where the plan's file paths and test conventions do not match your codebase, which could lead to misdirected steps

Try asking

  • “I have a spec for adding CSV export to our reporting module. Write an implementation plan before we code.”
  • “Break this authentication requirements doc into test-first tasks and save the plan under docs/superpowers/plans.”
  • “Review my feature spec and create a plan with file structure, tasks, and commit steps.”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    writing-plans.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip writing-plans.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip writing-plans.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Provide the spec file path or paste the spec so the agent can check coverage against it.
  • State your preferred plan location and execution mode up front to skip the questions at the end.
  • Review the generated plan's file paths and interfaces before approving, since the plan commits to those decisions.
