What it does

Once installed, when you ask the agent to explain a particular file, function, or module, it looks up that piece in a previously generated map of your project (a knowledge graph built by the companion /understand command). It then checks how that piece connects to other parts, reads the actual source code, and gives a plain-language explanation of its role, structure, and data flow. It also warns you if the map may be out of date compared with recent code changes.

Great for

  • Developers getting oriented in an unfamiliar codebase
  • Students or newcomers who need a walkthrough of a specific file or function
  • Engineers reviewing how a module fits into the overall architecture

Skip it if

  • Projects where /understand has not been run, since the skill stops and asks you to build the graph first
  • Quick one-line questions about syntax, where a simple prompt is faster and cheaper than a full deep-dive
  • Security audits or bug hunts, because the skill explains code rather than checking it for vulnerabilities

Try asking

  • “/understand-explain src/auth/login.ts”
  • “/understand-explain src/auth/login.ts:verifyToken”
  • “Explain how the payment module connects to the rest of the app”
  • “Walk me through what the config loader does and what depends on it”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Code Component Deep-DiveInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    understand-explain.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip understand-explain.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip understand-explain.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run /understand first, and re-run it after large code changes so the graph stays current.
  • Give a precise file path, or file path plus function name, so the agent finds the right node quickly.
  • Ask follow-up questions about connected components to explore the dependency chain step by step.
