What it does

This skill teaches an AI agent a repeatable process for handling the backlog of an software project's issue tracker. It sorts incoming bug reports, feature requests and external pull requests into a few roles (bug or enhancement, plus states such as needs-triage, needs-info, ready-for-agent, ready-for-human, or wontfix). It can check whether a claimed bug really reproduces, search the codebase for existing implementations, and draft polite questions or detailed briefs for other agents or humans to act on.

Great for

  • Maintainers of open-source or internal projects with a steady flow of issues and outside contributions
  • Teams that want consistent labelling and written responses to reporters
  • Anyone who wants an AI assistant to prepare work for a coding agent before it starts

Skip it if

  • Projects without an issue tracker or agreed label scheme, since the skill expects a mapping of role names to real labels (it tells the user to run a setup command otherwise) and the setup step is not included in these files
  • Automatic, unsupervised closing of issues: the skill asks the maintainer to confirm role changes, comments and closures, but a mistaken posting or closure on a live tracker is still a real-world action
  • Security-sensitive reports handled in public, because the skill has no guidance on private disclosure and would post comments to the tracker

Try asking

  • “Show me anything that needs my attention”
  • “Let's look at #42 and check whether the bug reproduces”
  • “Move #42 to ready-for-agent”
  • “What's ready for agents to pick up?”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Issue and PR TriageInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 4 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    triage.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip triage.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip triage.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Set the label mapping and tracker configuration before the first run so role names match your real labels.
  • Review every proposed comment, label change and closure before confirming, especially for wontfix and public disclosures.
  • Provide the project's domain glossary and ADRs so the codebase checks and recommendations are more accurate.
