What it does

When installed, this skill tells an AI agent to pin down a research topic before any method design, theory or report writing. The agent works through a fixed checklist: what data is observed and how it was sampled, what statistical model is assumed, what quantity is being estimated, which assumptions must hold, what claims are being tested, how success is measured, and what theoretical property should be derived. It also gives a standard YAML handoff structure and a Markdown template for the write-up, plus a quality bar that the formulation must be implementable without guessing.

Great for

  • Researchers or graduate students who need a rigorous statistical framing before running experiments
  • Teams using an AI research pipeline that needs a consistent problem specification for later stages
  • Anyone who wants a checklist to surface hidden assumptions in a study design

Skip it if

  • Quick data cleaning or descriptive charts, since the skill is designed for formal research framing and adds overhead (reason: it is a planning template, not an analysis tool)
  • Non-statistical topics, since the vocabulary assumes estimands, identifiability and error bounds (reason: the output may be misleading outside statistics)

Try asking

  • “Formulate a research question about whether a new drug dosage changes recovery time, with data model, estimand and assumptions”
  • “Turn my topic on causal effects of remote work on productivity into a formal problem statement with testable hypotheses”
  • “Produce a YAML handoff listing claims, evaluation criteria and theory targets for my survival analysis project”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    statistical-problem-formulation.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip statistical-problem-formulation.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip statistical-problem-formulation.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Provide your raw data description (sample size, sampling scheme, censoring) up front so the agent can fill the observed-data section accurately.
  • Review the listed assumptions yourself; the agent proposes them but a statistician must confirm they are realistic.
  • Use the blocking_ambiguities field to see what still needs clarification before moving to method design.
