What it does

When installed, the agent follows a set of publication-figure guidelines whenever you ask it to plot research data for a paper. It picks journal-appropriate figure sizes, uses colorblind-friendly palettes, adds error bars and significance markers, labels panels (A), (B), (C), and checks that axis labels include units. The skill is a written set of best practices; it does not add new software tools of its own.

Great for

  • Researchers preparing figures for a journal submission who want consistent formatting
  • Students writing theses or papers who are unsure about figure conventions
  • Developers building matplotlib or seaborn plotting code for scientific reports

Skip it if

  • Business dashboards or marketing graphics, since the rules are tuned for academic journals (the advice to remove gridlines and use direct labels may not suit them)
  • Final submission decisions: the guidance itself says to check each target journal's author guidelines, which override these defaults

Try asking

  • “Make a publication-ready two-panel figure of my treatment vs control data with error bars and significance stars”
  • “Recolor this seaborn plot so it is colorblind-safe and works in grayscale”
  • “Export this matplotlib chart at the right width for a single-column journal figure”
  • “Review my figure captions and axis labels against journal visualization standards”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Scientific Figure DesignInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    scientific-visualization.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip scientific-visualization.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip scientific-visualization.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Tell the agent your target journal and its figure width limits so it can apply the right sizing rules
  • Specify your data type and sample size so the agent picks dot or box plots instead of bar charts for small samples
  • Ask the agent to state which error bar type (SEM, SD, or 95% CI) to put in the caption, and confirm it matches your statistics
