What it does

This is a blank starter file for writing new Agent Skills, the folder-based instruction packs that teach an AI agent a specific capability. Once installed, the agent can use it as a guide when you ask it to create a new skill, showing the expected sections (when to activate, core concepts, guidelines, gotchas, integration, references) and the rules for writing them. It does not add a capability for end tasks by itself.

Great for

  • Developers contributing a new skill to the context-engineering collection
  • Anyone who wants a consistent structure for their own SKILL.md files

Skip it if

  • People looking for a finished skill to solve a task directly, since this is only a scaffold with placeholder text
  • Use outside the collection's conventions, where the cross-references to internal researcher files would point nowhere

Try asking

  • “Create a new skill for context engineering that follows the template structure”
  • “Show me the required sections for a SKILL.md in this collection”
  • “Draft the ownership boundary and do-not-activate block for my new skill”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Agent Skill TemplateInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 3 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    template.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip template.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip template.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Replace every placeholder section with specific, verifiable content rather than keeping the template wording.
  • Keep the main SKILL.md under 500 lines and move long material into references/.
  • Check that the description and When to Activate sections state what the skill owns and which neighbouring skills own nearby work.

What's inside

  • references/reference-file.md
  • references/topic-details.md
  • SKILL.md
