What it does

Once installed, the agent can browse lists of ready-made skills published in GitHub repositories (by default the curated openai/skills collection) and download the ones you choose into your local Atlas agent skills folder. It can also install skills from another GitHub repo or path, including private repos if you have access. The agent runs bundled Python scripts to do the fetching and copying, and tells you the new skill will be available on your next turn.

Great for

  • People who want to add existing community or vendor skills to their agent without manual file copying
  • Developers managing a set of skills across machines who want a repeatable install step
  • Teams installing skills from a private GitHub repo they already have access to

Skip it if

  • Anyone who wants to install skills from untrusted sources without reviewing them first, since installed skills can change how the agent behaves
  • Environments without network access or where the agent cannot run scripts, since every action depends on GitHub downloads and Python execution
  • Users expecting it to install skills from sources other than GitHub, since only GitHub URLs are supported for download mode

Try asking

  • “What skills are available to install from the curated list?”
  • “Install the skill named pdf-editor from the curated list”
  • “Install the skill at skills/.experimental/<skill-name> from openai/skills”
  • “Install a skill from https://github.com/owner/repo/tree/main/path/to/skill”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Skill InstallerInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 6 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    skill-installer.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip skill-installer.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip skill-installer.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Review the SKILL.md and scripts of any skill before installing it, especially ones from repos you do not control.
  • Use --dest or ATLAS_AGENT_HOME to control where skills are written, and check the result after installing.
  • Ask for the list first to see which skills are already installed before choosing new ones.
