What it does

When run, this skill inspects the current repository (git remote, AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md, existing glossary and ADR folders) and then walks you through choosing where issues are tracked (GitHub, GitLab, local markdown, or another tool), optionally which triage label names to use, and how domain docs are laid out. It then writes configuration notes into CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md and into docs/agents/, so other engineering skills know how to work with the repo. It asks for confirmation before writing and is meant to be run once before using the other engineering skills.

Great for

  • Developers setting up a repo to use Matt Pocock's engineering skills for the first time
  • Teams that want a consistent issue tracker and triage label convention across agent workflows

Skip it if

  • Repos that will never use the engineering skills, since the configuration has no effect on its own
  • Users who do not want the agent to run gh or glab commands or create labels in their tracker, because those steps can change a live project

Try asking

  • “Set up this repo for the engineering skills”
  • “Configure GitHub issues as the issue tracker for this project”
  • “Use local markdown issues under .scratch instead of a hosted tracker”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Setup Matt Pocock SkillsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 7 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    setup-matt-pocock-skills.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip setup-matt-pocock-skills.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip setup-matt-pocock-skills.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Accept the recommended defaults unless your tracker already uses different label names, such as bug:triage.
  • Review the drafted files before letting the agent write them, and check that the right remote is configured.
  • Run it from inside the repository root so the exploration step reads the correct files.
