What it does

Once installed, when you ask the agent to release or publish a new version, it follows a set workflow: it detects your version file (package.json, pyproject.toml, Cargo.toml, a Claude plugin marketplace.json, or a VERSION file), finds changelog files in several languages, reviews commits since the last git tag, picks a major, minor or patch bump from conventional commit messages, writes changelogs, and can create GitHub Releases or backfill missing ones. It also asks you questions through your agent's input tools when it needs a decision.

Great for

  • Maintainers of open-source projects who release often and want consistent version bumps and changelogs
  • Teams with multilingual changelogs (for example CHANGELOG.md plus CHANGELOG.zh.md)
  • Anyone who wants to backfill GitHub Releases for old tags from existing changelog sections

Skip it if

  • Projects that do not use git tags or conventional commit messages, since the version and changelog logic depends on them (the output may be wrong)
  • Releases where you have not reviewed the proposed version number and release notes, because the agent may publish something you did not intend
  • Projects with custom publishing needs that the file does not describe; the skill only mentions hooks in a general way and does not define how they run

Try asking

  • “/release-skills --dry-run to preview the next version and changelog changes”
  • “Bump version and release this project as a minor release”
  • “Create GitHub Releases for existing tags with --backfill-releases”
  • “Generate release notes in Chinese and Japanese alongside English”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Release Workflow AutomatorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    release-skills.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip release-skills.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip release-skills.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Always run --dry-run first and read the proposed version and changelog before a real release
  • Check the detected version file and changelog list in Step 1 output, since auto-detection may pick the wrong file in monorepos
  • Review any hook scripts in .releaserc.yml before allowing them to run, since they execute with your permissions
