What it does
Obsidian Bases are database-style views of your notes. Once this skill is installed, the agent knows the Bases file format (.base files written as YAML) and can write one for you: choosing which notes to include with filters, defining formulas, picking table, cards, list or map layouts, and checking the YAML for common mistakes such as bad quoting or undefined formula names. The skill itself only teaches the format; it does not run anything.
Great for
- Obsidian users who want a table or card view of notes filtered by tag, folder or frontmatter property
- People who keep notes with frontmatter and want computed columns such as days until a due date
- Anyone who wants help writing correct Bases YAML without learning the syntax first
Skip it if
- Users who do not use Obsidian, since .base files only render in Obsidian (the skill cannot help with other note apps)
- Tasks needing the agent to change many vault notes at once without review, because a wrong filter or formula can silently show the wrong notes; check the output in Obsidian first
Try asking
- “Create a Bases file that shows all notes tagged #book in a table sorted by rating”
- “Make a card view of notes in the Projects folder that are not archived”
- “Add a formula that calculates days until each note's due_date and display it in the table”
- “Build a base with a grouped list of notes modified in the last week”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Describe the notes you want in plain terms (tag, folder, property) so the agent can map them to filters.
- After the agent writes the .base file, open it in Obsidian to confirm the view renders and no YAML error appears.
- If a formula column is empty, ask the agent to check that every formula.X referenced in order is defined in formulas.
