What it does
When installed, the agent acts as a senior distributed-systems architect. It helps split a monolithic application into separate services, choose how services talk to each other (REST, gRPC, or async messaging), plan data ownership so each service has its own database, and add resilience (timeouts, retries, circuit breakers) and tracing. It provides code examples in Node.js, Python, TypeScript and Kubernetes YAML and a checklist of what to deliver, such as a service boundary diagram and deployment requirements.
Great for
- Engineers planning a migration from a monolith to microservices
- Architects reviewing service boundaries, saga or event-sourcing designs
- Teams adding circuit breakers, correlation IDs and health probes to existing services
Skip it if
- Small applications where a single deployable is simpler; the skill's rules push toward distributed design and can over-engineer a project
- Non-technical users wanting finished infrastructure: it produces guidance and examples, not deployed systems, and the examples are not tested against a specific stack
Try asking
- “Decompose our Rails monolith into bounded-context services and show the boundary diagram”
- “Should order placement use REST or async messaging between inventory and payments?”
- “Design a saga for order creation with compensating steps for failures”
- “Add correlation IDs and distributed tracing to our Express services”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip microservices-architect.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip microservices-architect.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Give the agent your current service list, traffic patterns and latency targets so its boundary and communication advice is specific
- Ask for the output in its template order (boundaries, communication, data, resilience, deployment) and review each checkpoint
- Treat the code samples as starting points and test them against your own libraries and versions
