What it does

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way to connect AI assistants to outside tools and data. With this skill installed, the agent knows the MCP conventions and SDK patterns well enough to scaffold a new MCP server or client, write tool handlers and resource providers with Zod or Pydantic input validation, set up stdio, HTTP or SSE transports, and walk through protocol errors using the MCP Inspector. It guides the work with a workflow, reference notes on the protocol, both SDKs, tools and resources, and example code.

Great for

  • Developers building a custom MCP server to connect an AI assistant to an internal API or database
  • Engineers debugging an MCP server that fails schema validation or returns malformed JSON-RPC responses
  • Teams in TypeScript or Python who want a starting scaffold for an MCP project

Skip it if

  • Someone who only wants to use existing MCP servers and has no need to write code, since this skill is for building them
  • Production deployments without review: the guidance says to add auth and rate limiting, but the skill does not enforce or verify those controls in your code

Try asking

  • “Create a TypeScript MCP server that exposes my company's ticket API as tools with Zod-validated inputs”
  • “Debug why my Python MCP server's tool call returns an error in the MCP Inspector”
  • “Add a resource provider that serves our app configuration over stdio”
  • “Set up an SSE transport for my existing MCP server”
Step-by-step guide: how to use MCP Server DeveloperInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 6 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    mcp-developer.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip mcp-developer.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip mcp-developer.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask for a specific scenario, such as which API or data source the server should wrap, so the scaffold matches your needs
  • Review every generated tool handler before running it, and keep credentials in environment variables rather than code
  • Run the MCP Inspector after each change to confirm tools appear and schemas accept valid inputs
