What it does

This skill turns the agent into a step-by-step tutor for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard way for AI assistants to connect to tools and data. Each time you invoke it, the agent teaches one lesson from the repository's MCP learning path, asks you to predict and inspect requests and responses, and runs or hand-traces small lab exercises. It keeps a progress file named MCP-LEARNING.md in your working directory that logs what was run, the exit codes and the observed results.

Great for

  • Developers who want a guided, hands-on route through building and securing MCP clients and servers
  • Students following the AI Engineering from Scratch course who want structured progress tracking
  • Learners who prefer conceptual hand-tracing when they cannot run the code locally

Skip it if

  • People who only want to use an existing MCP server; this is a course tutor, not a tool integration (the lessons are about building and understanding the protocol)
  • Production teams looking for a verified security review; the skill itself states that public deployment requires a threat model and an explicit gate that the learner must complete
  • Anyone who does not want the agent writing a progress file and running local Python commands in their directory

Try asking

  • “Start the MCP learning path from the beginning”
  • “Resume my MCP course where I left off”
  • “Walk me through Lesson 15 on MCP security and record the checkpoint”
  • “Explain the server/discover result from the Lesson 06 fundamentals demo”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Learn MCP TutorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    learn-mcp.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip learn-mcp.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip learn-mcp.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Say which mode you want: executable mode needs Python 3 and the local repository; conceptual mode works without them and is labelled as such in your notes
  • Run the suggested Python command yourself first if you want to check what the script does before the agent executes it
  • Keep MCP-LEARNING.md in a dedicated folder so progress from other courses is not mixed in
