What it does

When a workplace complaint or allegation comes in, this skill tells the agent to open a new investigation matter: it runs an intake of the details, produces a checklist of sources to collect, and creates a persistent investigation log. It is meant for an attorney who needs to set up a privileged investigation workspace. It also points the agent to a separate reference skill (internal-investigation) that holds the detailed intake rules, privilege requirements and log templates, which the agent must load before doing substantive work.

Great for

  • Employment lawyers or in-house counsel who need a structured starting point when a harassment or misconduct complaint arrives
  • Legal teams using the claude-for-legal plugin set who want consistent investigation files
  • HR or compliance staff working with counsel to organise the early stages of an inquiry

Skip it if

  • Anyone who is not a lawyer: the skill assumes attorney supervision and privilege judgement, and its output is not legal advice (risk of acting on unreviewed steps)
  • Investigations where the required reference skill (internal-investigation) is not installed: the skill depends on it for its actual templates and rules, so output may be incomplete
  • Jurisdictions or matters where privilege rules differ from the assumptions in the reference skill, since this file alone does not explain them

Try asking

  • “/employment-legal:investigation-open Harassment complaint filed against a manager in the Austin office.”
  • “/employment-legal:investigation-open (then answer the intake questions about a new allegation of discrimination)”
  • “Open a new investigation matter for a whistleblower report received by email yesterday”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Open Internal InvestigationInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    investigation-open.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip investigation-open.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip investigation-open.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give a short, specific description of the allegation as the argument so intake starts with useful facts
  • If a matter with the same name already exists, read the warning carefully before allowing an overwrite
  • Make sure the internal-investigation reference skill is installed, since the detailed templates and privilege guidance live there
