What it does

When someone submits an invention disclosure, this skill makes the agent run a structured first-pass screen covering six areas: novelty signals, obviousness flags, patent eligibility (§101), public disclosure and bar dates, detectability, and strategic value. Each area gets a pass, caution, or stop mark with a short reason. The agent then recommends whether to pursue a prior-art search and attorney review, gather more information, or decline. It is explicitly not a patentability opinion and never says an invention is patentable.

Great for

  • In-house IP teams triaging incoming invention disclosures from engineers
  • Patent practitioners who want a consistent first-pass intake memo
  • Companies deciding which inventions merit a prior-art search and filing budget

Skip it if

  • Deciding whether an invention is patentable: the skill itself states it does no prior-art search and no claim analysis, which requires a registered patent attorney or agent
  • Trademark or copyright-only practices: the skill says it is the wrong tool and routes elsewhere
  • Inventors without a legal team reviewing the output, since a wrong decline could forfeit patent rights

Try asking

  • “Here is an invention disclosure: a new cache-eviction algorithm using a learned model instead of LRU. Screen it for triage.”
  • “Screen this invention: we have a title only, ask me the intake questions first.”
  • “Run the invention intake on our new sensor calibration method and tell me whether it is time-sensitive.”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    invention-intake.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip invention-intake.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip invention-intake.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Complete the ip-legal cold-start interview first so the agent knows your filing strategy, technology areas and approval chain.
  • Give a plain-language description covering what it does, the problem solved, how it differs from prior art, inventors, and dates of any public disclosure, since bar dates drive urgency.
  • Treat the output as triage only; have a registered patent practitioner review anything marked PURSUE or time-sensitive, and treat invention content as confidential.
