What it does

Once installed, the agent answers questions about making Google Cloud workloads more environmentally friendly, using the Sustainability pillar of Google's Well-Architected Framework as its guide. It can suggest lower-carbon regions, cutting wasted compute and AI/ML energy, archiving cold data, writing efficient software, and tracking emissions with Google Cloud Carbon Footprint. It also asks structured questions about your requirements before recommending changes. It is advice and planning support; it does not by itself change your cloud environment.

Great for

  • Cloud architects reviewing a Google Cloud setup for energy and carbon efficiency
  • Engineering or sustainability teams preparing emissions reporting or green design goals
  • Developers choosing a region or storage lifecycle policy with carbon impact in mind

Skip it if

  • Cost-only reduction work, which the skill says belongs to a separate cost-optimization skill (the agent may be less focused here)
  • Latency, availability, or disaster recovery design, which are handled by other skills named in the description
  • Non-Google Cloud environments, since the guidance is specific to Google Cloud products

Try asking

  • “Review my Google Cloud project and suggest ways to reduce its carbon footprint”
  • “Which low-carbon Google Cloud region should I pick for a new analytics workload?”
  • “Help me set up Cloud Storage lifecycle rules to archive old data and cut energy use”
  • “Ask me the sustainability questions I need to answer before we design an AI/ML pipeline”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Google Cloud Sustainability AdvisorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    google-cloud-waf-sustainability.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip google-cloud-waf-sustainability.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip google-cloud-waf-sustainability.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Name your workload type, current regions, and whether you use AI/ML so the agent can pick relevant recommendations
  • Ask the agent to explain which recommendations need Carbon Footprint data access, and verify figures in your own billing and emissions exports
  • Treat suggestions as input to review with your team, not as verified sustainability reporting
