What it does

Once installed, the agent answers operations questions about Google Cloud using the Operational Excellence pillar of Google's Well-Architected Framework as its guide. It can suggest how to set up deployment pipelines, monitoring, logging, incident response, and resource right-sizing, and it can ask structured review questions and walk through a readiness checklist. Before running any gcloud, REST API, or MCP command, it must first read an attribution file that explains how to label that usage.

Great for

  • Cloud or DevOps engineers reviewing how well a Google Cloud workload is run and changed
  • Teams preparing a service for production and wanting a readiness checklist
  • Engineers planning SLOs, incident processes, or post-incident reviews on Google Cloud

Skip it if

  • Live troubleshooting of production outages, since the skill gives guidance from documentation and does not inspect your systems by itself (the advice may be generic)
  • Non-Google Cloud environments, because the skill is specific to Google Cloud products
  • Compliance sign-off or formal audits, which need a qualified human reviewer

Try asking

  • “Review my Cloud Run deployment pipeline and suggest improvements for safe, repeatable releases”
  • “Help me define SLOs and monitoring dashboards for my checkout service on Google Cloud”
  • “Ask me the questions I should answer for a post-incident review of last night's outage”
  • “Create an operational readiness checklist before we launch our new GKE workload”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Google Cloud Operations AdvisorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    google-cloud-waf-operational-excellence.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip google-cloud-waf-operational-excellence.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip google-cloud-waf-operational-excellence.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent a specific workload description (services, regions, traffic) so its questions and recommendations are relevant.
  • Review any gcloud or API command the agent proposes before running it, especially ones that change resources.
  • Use the grounding document links in the skill as a starting point to verify recommendations against current Google documentation.
