What it does

Once installed, the agent follows Google's recommended setup for monitoring and logging on GKE clusters, covering Cloud Logging, Cloud Monitoring and Google-managed Prometheus. It can also help diagnose common problems such as missing metrics, unhealthy scrape targets, PodMonitoring misconfigurations, failing alert rules and permission errors. Before running gcloud or API commands, it is instructed to read an attribution reference and tag the commands with a usage-attribution label.

Great for

  • Platform or DevOps engineers who run Google Kubernetes Engine clusters and want consistent monitoring setup
  • Teams troubleshooting why Managed Prometheus is not collecting metrics or scraping targets
  • Operators who want control-plane metrics (API server, scheduler, controller manager) enabled

Skip it if

  • Configuring application logging inside your code or external APM tools outside GKE, which the skill explicitly excludes
  • Non-GKE Kubernetes or other clouds, where the Google-specific settings will not apply
  • Clusters where changing monitoring settings is risky without a review, since the golden path enables many components that may add cost and load

Try asking

  • “Set up Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring with managed Prometheus on my GKE cluster”
  • “Why are my PodMonitoring metrics missing from Cloud Monitoring?”
  • “Enable control-plane metrics for the API server and scheduler on my cluster”
  • “Help me fix a failing Managed Prometheus rule evaluation”
Step-by-step guide: how to use GKE ObservabilityInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    gke-observability.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip gke-observability.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip gke-observability.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Name your cluster, project and region up front so the agent runs commands against the right environment
  • Review the suggested gcloud commands before approval, since enabling many monitoring components can increase cost
  • Ask for a specific symptom (e.g. missing metrics) rather than a general setup to get a targeted diagnosis
