What it does

When installed, the agent follows Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) networking best practices when you ask about cluster networking. It defaults to private clusters with no public node IPs, VPC-native routing, Dataplane V2 and Cloud DNS, and it helps size pod and service IP ranges. It can also give you gcloud commands to get cluster credentials or create a cluster in an existing VPC, and it points to other skills for ingress, load balancing, and workload security.

Great for

  • Platform or cloud engineers designing a new GKE cluster network layout
  • Teams that need private GKE clusters and want consistent defaults
  • Anyone sizing pod and service IP ranges to avoid running out of addresses

Skip it if

  • Exposing applications to users through ingress or load balancers; the skill says to use gke-service-networking for that
  • Beginners with no GKE experience, since the commands assume Google Cloud and Kubernetes knowledge and could create costly or hard-to-undo infrastructure
  • Non-Google clouds or self-managed Kubernetes, which the skill does not cover

Try asking

  • “Design a private VPC-native GKE cluster in europe-west1 with Dataplane V2 and Cloud DNS”
  • “How many pods fit in a /17 pod range if I set maxPodsPerNode to 110?”
  • “Give me the gcloud command to get credentials for my private cluster using the DNS endpoint”
  • “Plan IP ranges for a GKE cluster that must give nodes a static egress IP for a partner allowlist”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    gke-networking.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip gke-networking.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip gke-networking.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Review every gcloud command before it runs, since create and update commands change live infrastructure; VPC, subnet, and IP ranges cannot be changed after cluster creation.
  • State your region, existing VPC, and expected pod count so the IP sizing advice fits your setup.
  • Check the Day-0 and Day-1 notes in the defaults table against your organization's security policies before applying them.
