What it does

When installed, the agent acts like a product manager for a software project. It reads the project's README, docs, code and tests, compares what the docs promise against what is actually implemented, and flags placeholder or incomplete features. It then scores the gaps, picks the top three, and writes detailed specifications covering scope, technical needs, implementation plan and acceptance criteria, formatted as GitHub issue drafts with dependency notes.

Great for

  • Maintainers of open-source or internal projects who want a structured review of what is still missing
  • Teams planning the next sprint who need draft issues with acceptance criteria
  • Developers onboarding to an unfamiliar codebase who want a gap overview

Skip it if

  • Projects where the agent cannot read the repository, since the workflow depends on reading code and docs
  • Anyone expecting the scoring to be objective: the 1-5 scores and priority formula are judgement calls the agent makes and may be inconsistent
  • Users who expect issues to be created automatically: the SKILL.md describes creating issues but does not include any script or tool setup for doing so

Try asking

  • “Review this project and tell me which core features are documented but not really implemented.”
  • “Find the top three missing features in this repo and write specs for them.”
  • “Draft GitHub issues with acceptance criteria and blocked-by relationships for the gaps you found.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Gap Analysis to GitHub IssuesInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    gen-specs-as-issues.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip gen-specs-as-issues.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip gen-specs-as-issues.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Point the agent at a specific repository folder and say which area to focus on, so the gap list stays focused rather than covering everything.
  • Treat the scores and priority ranking as a starting point and check them against your own knowledge of the project.
  • Review generated issue drafts before posting them, especially dependency links and effort estimates.
