What it does

An .editorconfig file tells code editors how to format files (indentation, line endings, encoding, trailing spaces) so everyone on a project gets the same style. With this skill installed, the agent looks at a project's file types and your stated preferences, such as spaces instead of tabs and 2-space indentation, then writes a complete .editorconfig file and explains what each rule does and why. It only produces text for you to review and save; it does not run any code or contact the internet.

Great for

  • Developers starting a new repository who want a consistent editor setup
  • Teams that keep mixing tabs and spaces or line-ending styles across editors
  • Maintainers who want a documented, explained baseline config for contributors

Skip it if

  • Projects that already have a tuned .editorconfig, since the generated file may overwrite sensible existing rules
  • Projects with strict language-specific formatting needs (e.g. Go's gofmt or Python's black), where the formatter's own config should take priority

Try asking

  • “Create an .editorconfig for my Node.js project that uses 2-space indentation and spaces, not tabs”
  • “Generate an .editorconfig for this repo and explain each rule so my team understands it”
  • “Add per-file-type rules for Python and Markdown to my existing project layout”
Step-by-step guide: how to use EditorConfig GeneratorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    editorconfig.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip editorconfig.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip editorconfig.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Describe your preferences explicitly (indent style, size, line endings) so the agent does not fall back to defaults.
  • Review the generated file against your existing editor and formatter settings before committing it.
  • Place the generated file at the repository root so that root = true applies to the whole project.
