What it does
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standard way to give AI assistants tools, prompts and data sources. This skill teaches the agent the up-to-date way to build such servers in C# using Microsoft's official ModelContextProtocol NuGet packages, avoiding outdated preview APIs and known breaking changes between SDK versions. It points the agent to detailed reference notes for transports (stdio and HTTP), tools, prompts, resources, elicitation, testing and building a basic .NET client.
Great for
- .NET developers adding an MCP server or tool to an existing C# app
- Teams migrating older preview MCP code to the stable 2.x SDK
- Developers who want an agent to scaffold a correct STDIO or Streamable HTTP MCP server
Skip it if
- MCP work in other languages such as TypeScript or Python, which the skill explicitly excludes
- Production deployments without review, since the generated code and deployment advice should be checked against current NuGet and spec documentation
Try asking
- “Create a new .NET MCP server over STDIO that exposes a weather lookup tool”
- “Add a Streamable HTTP MCP endpoint to my ASP.NET Core app with MapMcp”
- “Add a prompt and a resource to my existing C# MCP server”
- “Write a small .NET console client that calls tools on an MCP server”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip dotnet-mcp-builder.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip dotnet-mcp-builder.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- State which transport you need (STDIO or HTTP) so the agent loads the right reference file.
- Verify package versions and API names against NuGet and the official API reference, since the skill itself warns against guessing.
- Review generated stdout usage and any network or auth wiring before deploying; the skill covers these but the code is not run by the skill itself.
