What it does
When installed, the agent follows Django and Django REST Framework best practices when you ask it to build or change a Django web app or API. It designs models with indexes, reduces slow database lookups using select_related and prefetch_related, writes serializers and viewsets with permissions, sets up JWT login, and writes tests. It also loads detailed reference notes on each topic when needed.
Great for
- Python developers building or maintaining a Django or Django REST Framework backend
- Teams who want consistent API structure, permissions and test coverage from an AI assistant
- Developers new to Django who want the agent to apply recommended patterns
Skip it if
- Non-programmers: the output is Python code that must be run, reviewed and deployed by someone technical
- Projects not using Django (e.g. FastAPI or Flask), where the guidance would be off-target
- Production security decisions without review: the skill gives general rules (env variables, no DEBUG in production, JWT) but does not audit your specific configuration
Try asking
- “Create a Django model for blog posts with proper indexes and a related author”
- “Build a DRF viewset with IsAuthenticatedOrReadOnly permissions for my articles API”
- “Set up SimpleJWT authentication in my Django project's settings.py and urls.py”
- “Write APITestCase tests for my product listing endpoints”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Name your Django version and whether you use DRF, JWT or sessions so the agent picks the right reference notes.
- Review every generated migration and run manage.py migrate in a development database before production.
- Keep secrets in environment variables as the skill recommends, and never paste real credentials into the chat.
