What it does

Word files (.docx) are compressed bundles of XML that AI agents cannot reliably read as plain text. When this skill is installed, the agent first runs a bundled Python script that converts each Word document into a Markdown text file and saves its embedded images as separate image files in a folder next to the original. The agent then reads that Markdown to summarize, search, compare, or pull data from the document. Older .doc files are not supported and must be re-saved as .docx.

Great for

  • Professionals who want an agent to summarize or review contracts, reports, proposals, or resumes in Word format
  • Anyone processing a whole folder of Word documents in one batch
  • Developers who want reliable text extraction from .docx files without writing their own parser

Skip it if

  • Legacy .doc files, which the skill explicitly does not support (re-save as .docx first)
  • Environments where running Python scripts is disallowed, since the skill executes a bundled script and needs the markitdown package installed
  • Sensitive or confidential documents sent to a cloud-hosted agent, since the converted content is passed through the agent's model like any other file content

Try asking

  • “Summarize the attached proposal.docx and list the key deadlines”
  • “Convert every Word document in C:\Contracts to Markdown and compare the payment terms”
  • “Extract the skills and work history from this resume.docx into a table”
  • “Review report.docx and pull out all the figures mentioned in the results section”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Convert Word to MarkdownInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 4 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    convert-word-to-md.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip convert-word-to-md.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip convert-word-to-md.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the full absolute path to the .docx file; the skill asks for confirmation rather than guessing a location.
  • If you have a mix of Word, PDF, and Excel files in one folder, ask for all of them together so the sibling skills also run and nothing is skipped.
  • Check the output folder for extracted images if your document depends on diagrams or screenshots; corrupt or password-protected files will be reported as failures.
