What it does

When installed, this skill tells the agent to survey a codebase before editing anything. It searches for files related to your task, notes which files depend on each other, finds related tests and similar code to copy, and produces a structured table-based map with a short risk checklist. The agent is told to wait for you to review that map before it starts implementing changes.

Great for

  • Developers about to make a change in an unfamiliar codebase
  • Teams that want a written impact review before code is modified
  • People who want an agent to plan carefully rather than edit files right away

Skip it if

  • Simple, single-file edits where a map adds little value and extra steps
  • Non-coding tasks, since the instructions assume a software codebase with imports and tests
  • Anyone expecting the skill to verify correctness: it only lists files and risks, and the map's accuracy depends on the agent's search

Try asking

  • “Before I add rate limiting to the login API, create a context map of the files involved”
  • “Map everything that would be affected if we rename the User model”
  • “Generate a context map for moving payment handling into its own module before you change anything”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Context MapInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    context-map.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip context-map.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip context-map.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Describe the task specifically, since the skill fills in your description and the search is only as good as the detail you give
  • Read the map carefully before approving; the agent may miss files or list irrelevant ones
  • Use it alongside the agent's normal tools so it can actually search the repository
