What it does
When you ask the agent to write a commit message, it reads your git diff or a description of your changes and drafts a commit message in the standard Conventional Commits format. The message has a short typed subject line, a body explaining the reason for the change rather than just listing edits, and optional footers such as issue references or breaking-change notes. It does not run git commit itself; it only writes the text for you to use.
Great for
- Developers who want clearer, more useful commit history for a team or open-source project
- Anyone preparing a pull request who wants meaningful commit messages
- Developers who find it hard to summarise their changes in one line
Skip it if
- Projects that do not use Conventional Commits, since the output format will not match their conventions
- Situations where you want the agent to stage files and commit automatically; this skill only drafts text and points to a separate git-commit skill for that
- Commits where the reason for the change is unknown: the skill infers intent from the diff, so it may invent a plausible but wrong 'why' that needs checking
Try asking
- “Write a commit message for my staged changes”
- “Summarize my diff and suggest a commit type”
- “What should I commit this as? Here is my git diff output”
- “Describe my changes as a conventional commit that closes issue #312”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Paste the output of git diff --staged and add a sentence explaining why you made the change, so the story is accurate
- Mention the issue number if one exists so the footer can reference it
- Review the generated 'why' before committing, since the agent may guess the motivation from code alone
