What it does

Once installed, the agent can turn a codebase into a CodeTour file (.tour), a guided walkthrough that opens in the VS Code CodeTour extension and points to specific files and lines. It explores the repo, picks the parts that matter for a chosen reader (such as a new joiner, bug fixer, or PR reviewer), and writes a narrative with steps. It then runs a bundled validator to check that every file path, line number and cross-reference exists.

Great for

  • Engineers onboarding new team members to an unfamiliar repository
  • Maintainers who want a reviewer or bug fixer walkthrough for a specific PR or incident
  • Open-source maintainers writing contributor guides

Skip it if

  • Teams without VS Code or the CodeTour extension, since the output is only useful in that tool
  • Very large monorepos where the agent cannot read enough files to build an accurate tour; results may miss important areas
  • Anyone expecting it to change application code: the skill is meant to write only .tour JSON files

Try asking

  • “Create an onboarding tour for a new joiner on this repo”
  • “Make a PR review tour for the changes in this branch”
  • “Generate an architecture tour explaining how the request lifecycle works”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Code Tour BuilderInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 5 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    code-tour.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip code-tour.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip code-tour.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Name the persona explicitly (for example new-joiner or security reviewer) so the tour has a clear audience and focus.
  • Let the agent run validate_tour.py after writing; review any reported missing files or bad line numbers before sharing the tour.
  • Read the scripts before running them on a sensitive repo, since they execute locally on your machine.
